Build Your Team

It takes community to build community.

Smooth planning and delivery of an Open Street Project relies on teamwork.

Find existing organizations that may be interested in collaborating, for example:

  • Community centers and recreation groups.

  • Local businesses and business associations.

  • Cultural and interest groups

  • Volunteer organizations.

* It is strongly suggested to find allies in your municipal government, especially if your community has never hosted an Open Streets Event before. Open Streets events do not meet the criteria of most municipalities’ existing block party or parade permits. Building relationships with municipal counselors and bureaucrats will help with navigating permits and other municipal services [traffic, utilities, emergency services] when planning your events.

The tasks involved with planning fall into three categories below. Each category may be assigned to a committee or a single person depending on needs. Some jurisdictions require at least three contacts for application forms, a designated contact for each category is suggested. Your team can be as big or small as it needs to be, but effective delegation is key.
