Activity 12: Imagine That    


Purpose

  • To allow for participants to visualize their pedestrian environments and get a mental image of things they may encounter along their travel route  

Location

  • Open area either inside or outside  

Materials

Safety Considerations

  • Ensure participants have enough personal space to sit comfortably.  

Instructional Considerations  

  • For participants that are not engaged in the discussion, ask them direct questions so they can contribute to the conversation.  

  • Reinforce the importance of participants listening to peers and respecting turns. 


Guidelines

  • Participants will discuss with the large crew some of the things they can and have encountered on their travel routes. Ask them to identify both positive features and possible safety concerns.  

  • Use these questions to support their discussion:  

    • Do you have many neighbours? 

    • Do your neighbours have pets?   

    • Are there many streets that connect to yours?  

    • Do many people use your travel route?  

    • Are there a lot of vehicles on your street/route?  

    • Is there a bus route on part of your travel route?  

    • Are there any stores or businesses along your travel route?  

    • Are there sidewalks all along your travel route?  

  • Use these safety signs to support their discussion:  

  • “Walk” signal  

  • “Don’t Walk” signal

  • Construction sign

  • Pedestrian (walker) crossing  

  • Traffic light

  • Crosswalk
